Known as a mythical place, Gamla Uppsala represents an important sacred site that hosted regular sacrificial rites and fiery burials of royalty. From the 3rd century CE onward, the small village served as an important religious, economic, and political center and was well-known as the residence of the Swedish kings of the Yngling dynasty. Today the site features burial mounds of ancient kings dating from the 5th century CE, a grave field, and the stone church erected over the pagan temple in the 11th century.
