Kalmar Castle, Kalmar

#1 of 73 in Things to do in Kalmar County
Must see · Castle · Historic Site
See firsthand how kings lived at Kalmar Castle, a 16th-century palace built in Renaissance-style architecture. The castle began as a round defensive tower in the 12th century, a powerful defensive compound strategically built just north of the Danish border. In 1397 it served as the crucial location for signing the Kalmar Union. Explore the dramatic history of the castle through the rooms in the governor's apartments--each represents a different event. Travel over the moat, across the tower bridge, and through the courtyard to see the dungeons, chapel, cannons, and hidden rooms of the castle. Be sure to join a guided tour led by knowledgeable guides dressed in period attire; you'll learn about the ghosts of the castle, among other things. • This castle is the stuff of fairy tales. Absolutely sublime. One of the greatest experiences in my life was seeing this castle in the moonlight (the serious monnlight) in the snow!  more »

  • A really beautiful day not only for the castle but for strolling through the beautiful gardens that surrounds the palace where the Swedish royal family used to reside. Also after you stroll through the gardens you come to a beautiful outside restaurant with magnificent food. And also fine dining inside if you prefer to be pampered by their excellent staff I had white fish with a delicious lobster sauce with small white potatoes My husband had a freshly cooked lasagna fit for a King
  • A nice combination of ancient architecture and modern beauty. I enjoyed my visit. Definitely recommend for spending 2 hours if you are not in a hurry and can take your time to taste a glimpse of Kalmar. Unfortunately hard to find parking in the vicinity. So you have to plan it in a good time in advance... 👍👍👍
