Castillo de Gibralfaro
The city of Málaga's official flag depicts this castle, known as Castillo de Gibralfaro. Built in the tenth century by the Caliph of Córdoba, and expanded by the Sultan of Granada, the fortress also once housed King Ferdinand. AS you approach, you'll see ramparts rising from the surrounding woods. This distinguishing feature, along with a few interior buildings and a large courtyard, are well preserved. Take a stroll along the ramparts on the outer wall and you'll catch a view of the interior of the bullfighting ring next door. Our Malaga trip planner makes visiting Castillo de Gibralfaro and other Malaga attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

Steep climb up the hill but worth it for the 360 degree views over Malaga, the mountains and the Mediterranean. There’s a small museum explaining the history of the castillo (in Spanish only). Not... more »

A very slow and steep climb to the top but once there the views are magnificent. Allow plenty of time if you are walking to the top my wife and I managed it but with a few stops to admire the views... more »

I would recommend catching the bus up to Castillo Gibralfaro from the centre. It's very cheap and drops you off in front of the castle. There is a cafe, with toilets and plenty of water fountains. There is not very much to see of the original castle, apart from the external walls. You can walk around the walls and you will find good views over the Port, Town and Cathedral. The site contains fragrant plants and shrubs. The breeze is very pleasant in the heat. The path down is very slippery, you have been warned! Only risk it if your shoes have good grip!

Great views, great history. With a small fee it is easily accessible. You can go pretty much anywhere in the old fort!
