Museo Castillo De Javier, Javier

3.8
Castle · Tourist Spot
Rising atop a rocky outcrop overlooking the frontier with Aragon, Museo Castillo De Javier offers spectacular views of Navarre's famously green hills and forests. The castle dates back to the tenth century, and is well-known among locals as the birthplace of St. Francis Xavier, the patron saint of Navarre. The castle is also home to a large number of 15th- to 20th-century Spanish paintings, as well as a collection of 19th-century Japanese kakemonos collected by the saint during his missions in Japan. Don't miss the 14th century Christ figure in the chapel of the Torre del Santo Cristo which, according to legend, bled when St. Francis Xavier was taking his last breaths in China. If you happen to be visiting in early March, note that the castle is the site of a major pilgrimage around this time in honour of its patron saint. • They did a very nice job of serving us and the facility is well kept. The castle is very interesting with small windows with information of the life of Xavier .  more »
  • Great castle and really cheap compared to the UK prices. Very good exhibition to go round and friendly staff.  more »

  • It is xavier's parents' home that everyone in Japan knows. I can't believe I came to Japan in the 16th century from such a far place. I'm impressed when I think about it. The museum also mentions xavier's visit to Japan.

  • The castle itself is very nice and worth a visit, but the entrance is a bit expensive for what to visit, it is not too big.... 3eur per head and when choosing audioguia 2euros more.... would go again but without audio guidance, not worth it. To eat, the restaurants are excessively expensive, a mixed salad 10euros, you can take the food and eat by some garden there. We went to bloodied to eat when we saw the prices so exorbitant of both restaurants.
