Holy Assumption Cathedral, Vladimir

Must see · Church · Tourist Spot
Admire some of the greatest works of celebrated icon painter Andrei Rublyev, including "Last Judgment" frescoes painted in 1408, at Holy Assumption Cathedral, a World Heritage Site. The construction of the church, where the princes of ancient Russia were crowned, began in 1158. Notice the elaborate carving on the exterior walls, which were innovative at the time. The interior is illuminated only by candles and the daylight streaming in from the high windows. It features a few restored, 12th-century murals of peacocks and prophets, and the Baroque iconostasis donated by Catherine the Great in the late 18th century. A classical style bell tower with a tall, golden helmet was erected in the early 19th century.
