Saint Petersburg's prime cultural attraction, The State Hermitage Museum houses a collection of over 3 million artworks from around the globe. The massive palace-museum, once the official residence of Russian emperors, provides an elegant setting for priceless works by Rubens, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Rembrandt, Goya, Degas, and many more. Founded in 1764 by Catherine the Great and open to the public since the 1850s, the museum displays only a small portion of its collection of paintings, the largest in the world. The easiest and quickest way to see the highlights is by guided tour in your native language. The lines at the on-site ticket office can be quite long, so avoid the wait by booking your visit online. The Hermitage, an incredible museum and possibly the best or one of the best in the world. A visit to this museum is an absolute must for any tourist visiting St. Petersburg. The building itself is impressively beautiful outside and inside, and the rooms and hallways are the most decorated areas I have ever seen. Literally every square centimeter in this building is decorated and adorned, and you will be impressed with every room you walk into. Paintings and artwork in the museum are impressive too and they have some very unique pieces from different times in Russia as well as abroad. Also check out the souvenir shop near the exit, it's affordable and has some interesting items. I visited in the winter and lines were short in the morning. It probably gets very busy in the summer so I recommend visiting early right after opening or buying a ticket online to skip the long lines in the summer.
Hermitage is an important place to visit. We had a really long queue to stay to get in ( about 3 hours). But if you go through the arch there are several machine for the tickets which can really help you to economies your time. The best way is still to by online, then you will not need to wait at whole. Incide building itself is impressive, not saying about the expositions. Do not try to cross it whole in a one day, it is impossible.
