Yakovlevsky Savior Monastery, Rostov

Walk among the extensive gardens and admire the distinctive architecture of the cathedrals and churches at Yakovlevsky Savior Monastery. Located on the outskirts of the city, the monastery, founded in the 14th century by St. Iakov of Rostov, sits on the edge of a lake and features a combination of different styles and architectural forms, including Neo-Gothic towers and a mixture of Baroque and Neo-Classical churches. The Dmitrievskaya Church was built in the classical style, funded by Count Sheremetev, while the Savior Transfiguration Cathedral was built in the 17th century and once belonged to another monastery. The oldest building on the grounds is the Cathedral of Conception of St. Anna, constructed in 1686. Visit the holy water spring in the front upon entry to the property. Enjoy bread and beer made by the monks in the cafe in the monastery. Note that there are fees for taking photographs inside the churches, climbing the towers, and gaining access to the walls surrounding the monastery for views of the lake. Scarves and long skirts are required for any women entering the churches, and are provided at the entrance to the monastery free of charge.
