Sobor Petra I Pavla, St. Petersburg

#9 of 266 in Historic Sites in St. Petersburg
Church · Landmark
Visit Sobor Petra I Pavla and admire its red-brick walls, glazed tiles, ornate decoration, and five spires arranged in the shape of a tent. The story goes that the cathedral was built in the Neo-Russian style in 1904 for common people, who were not allowed into palace churches. A viewing platform around the church's 60 m (197 ft) high central spire provides views over the marshland and pine forest all the way to St. Petersburg. The interior of the church features three icon-stands: two made of white Carrara marble and one of majolica. Climb the high, well-lit gallery to look for the special places for consecrating eggs and Easter cakes.
