Naval Cathedral of St. Nicholas, St. Petersburg

#6 of 266 in Historic Sites in St. Petersburg
Church · Tourist Spot
View stunning architecture and design from the early 20th century at Naval Cathedral of St. Nicholas, the main church of the Russian Navy. After several failed architecture competitions, admiral Stepan Makarov hired Vasily Kosyakov, a Neo-Byzantine architectural master, to design the church. Construction on the large Russian Orthodox cathedral began in 1901 and continued until 1913, when it was opened to the public and dedicated to Navy servicemen who died at sea. Though the cathedral was converted to a cinema, and later a museum of the Navy, it was eventually reclaimed by the church. Nowadays you can tour the well-preserved structure. • Very beautiful cathedral both inside and outside. From the outside, the cathedral stands above the center of the city with an imposing grandeur that is hard to miss. On the inside, one can feel both a sense of fervor and amazement at the beauty and serenity of the place. The ornate and intricate artwork leaves you in awe. While the lavish and majestic icons gives a feeling of the majesty of God and the smallness of man. The cathedral is still functioning as a church, so sometimes one can catch Orthodox church services while inside the church.
  • One of the most magical places and the most beautiful Cathedral. Very interesting excursions, especially to the top under the main dome on the colonnade. You can enjoy an amazing view from the bird's eye.
