Trip Planner: Europe / Russia / Volga District / Republic of Tatarstan / Kazan / Leaning Suyumbike Tower
Learn the tragic love story behind the building of Leaning Suyumbike Tower, a sacred symbol and a place of worship for the Tatar people. Legend has it that Tsar Ivan the Terrible built the tower for a Kazan princess who jumped to her death from the tower rather than becoming his bride. However, the 58 m (190 ft) brick tower, with six widening tiers on a gated arch, was constructed most likely 150 years after Ivan's conquest of Kazan in 1552. Its weak foundation has begun to sink, giving the tower a noticeable lean. The tower is the most prominent feature of the Kazan Kremlin, which was declared a historical and cultural open-air museum in 1994 and a World Heritage Site in 2000.
