Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin features one of the most elegant exteriors in Russian sacral architecture. A symbol of medieval Russia, this World Heritage site was built on a man-made hill in approximatley 1165. Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky commissioned the church to celebrate the victory over the Bulgarians and to commemorate his son's death in the battle. Walk the stone-paved road through the meadow to approach the church. Admire the 12th-century stone carvings on the exterior walls.
