Sintra National Palace
The historic Sintra National Palace represents the most well-preserved medieval palace in Portugal. You can tour the palace, which was named a National Monument and World Heritage Site, for a closer look at the preservation and restoration. This castle dates back to the 10th century and was inhabited from at least the 15th through 19th centuries. While it was built in Moorish times, its architectural style is a result of rebuilding in the 1400s. View the mixture of Gothic, Manueline, Mudéjar, and Moorish style present today, as well as decorative ceramic tiles added to the site during the Age of Discoveries. This is a lovely place to visit. We were unaware of the total history of Portugal and had expected the royal palace to be much older. Glad it wasn't because we got a great look at what passed for cutting edge in the 19th century. Fascinating stuff. There are self guided tours available - we hired a guide. Glad we did because we find that you get a lot more out of the visit. Finding the place was easy and parking convenient. Costs were minimal.
