Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Monte, Funchal

#2 of 16 in Historic Sites in Funchal
Church · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
Built in 1741, Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Monte is a Jesuit church that offers a peaceful place for reflection as well as expansive views of Funchal and surrounding areas. For a small fee, you are able to climb the tower and enjoy one of the best viewpoints in town. At the top, watch for the famous "carros de cesto," or basket cars, that run down the streets and send visitors downhill at high speeds in wicker baskets. It is also the final resting place of the last Hapsburg emperor, Charles I, who died in 1922, so go inside to see his tomb. • Beautiful church located next to the cable car and the Toboggans. Interior of the church is amazing and the views outside are exceptional.
  • Glorious view of the mountains and the village below.
