Gatun Locks, Colon

Must see · Landmark · Tourist Spot
Watch southbound ships raised 29.5 m (97 ft) from the Caribbean to Lago Gatun at Gatun Locks, a set of locks leading to the Panama Canal. Opened in 1914, the locks represented one of the finest engineered structures at the time, and the world's largest concrete construction until the building of the Hoover Dam in 1930. It takes around two hours to move the ships through the locks, so grab a seat at the viewing stand opposite the control tower to see the whole process unfold. • Old Gatun locks are still worth seeing, such an engineering marvel. It’s a shame it was fenced off, didn’t use to be when we lived there, but still lovely.  more »

  • It's time ever going to the Panama canal. Absolutely beautiful. Wish I had known more about it before we saw it.
  • Very impressive! Definately a bucket list item to experience. It really is quite something to see the locks transport our cruise ship and these large tankers through the different water depths. I did not expect to be as impressed as I was!
