Standing on a hilltop offering a spectacular view of the city, Kristiansten Fortress originally served in the 17th century as a city defense wall. During World War II, the occupying German forces used it as an execution site. Tour the defense museum within the main building, the Donjon. The former commandant's residence now houses a full restaurant, and activity trails are available for children. Wear comfortable shoes to walk to the fortress and pack a light jacket.   • The most important with visiting this fortress is the magnificent view of the city. We walked up from the lovely Bakklandet area which is nearby.  more »
  • Not too far from the centre, and a lovely walk over the old Gamle bridge through the pretty district of Bakk-Landet to reach the ramparts of the old fort with excellent views across the city, fjord...  more »
  • A well preserved fortress, with some excellent views over the city, the river and the harbour. A nice restaurant if you need a snack after the hike to the top of the hill! We enjoyed the different vistas from all of the ramparts.
