View three actual Viking ships, the Soeberg, the Gokstad, and the Tune, and learn more about their history at Viking Ship Museum. The ships were built between 800 and 900, and were excavated in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Displays give information on how they were found and preserved. The Tune ship was the first Viking ship to be unearthed and remains the third best-preserved ship in the world. Also, see the artifacts that were buried with each ship, such as carts, sleds, cooking gear, and more. Be sure to climb up into the designated viewing areas that allow you to see each ship from a different perspective and fully appreciate their size. If you have your smartphone with you, you can scan the barcodes associated with the exhibits to receive more detailed information online. Viking Ship Museum reviews
A little dated in style, but due to close in October 2021 for 5 years for a new building. Nicely presented informative, the video was quite difficult to follow as you needed to look at all the wall..... more »
Small but really awesome exhibition of original viking ships preserved in great condition. Really feel the connection to historical times. more »
The most amazing museum in Oslo! So nice to see the impressive Viking ships and their history. It tells amazing details on how they were built, what they found with them and stories on how they lived their life. Things I had never heard before. The little shop also had nice souvenirs of the Vikings, including books. Besides, the area around is very very cool, has beautiful houses with typical Norwegian architecture. Super recommended!
Great museum of you are interested in viking history and artifacts. The non-linear arrangement of the exhibitions is not optimal, but make for pretty surroundings. The video material shown at the museum is very well produced and super educational. Would definitely recommend it if you have a few hours to spare in Oslo and the plans for the new expansion in 2026 (don't your me on the time) looks absolutely awesome!
