Must see · Mountain · Nature / Park
Galdhøpiggen is the tallest mountain in Norway, Scandinavia and Northern Europe, at 2,469 m (8,100 ft) above sea level. It is located within the municipality of Lom (in Oppland), in the Jotunheimen mountain area.EtymologyGaldhøpiggen means "the peak/spike of the mountain Galdhø." The first element in the name of the mountain is gald "steep mountain road", the last element is hø " rounded mountain." An old road between Gudbrandsdalen and Sogn passes beneath the mountain.HistoryGeologically Galdhøpiggen, like most of Southern Norway's mountain ranges, belongs to the Caledonian folding. The peak is made of gabbro, a hard but rather coarse-grained rock which is found in most of the Jotunheimen range. During the ice ages it was heavily glaciated and got its present form. The theory that the highest summits in Norway stayed above the ice as nunataks has been abandoned by most geologists. It fits well with the present flora in the area, but it does not fit well with the present knowledge of ice thickness and the results of glaciation.

  • Hiked to the summit from Spiterstulen. The path is well-marked, it's hard to miss. Start your trek early as there will be a constant flow of wanderers the whole day. Bring several liters of water...  more »
  • Beautiful hike but with a lot of fogg and really not recommended to hike in those conditions due to risk of walking of the edge. We were really careful, looking for the red "T"-s that mark the route.....  more »
  • Great hike, with rewarding views at the top. The ascension is aroind 1600 meters with the starting point at 800m. The hike to the top takes between 4-5 hours, but may be doable in under 4 hours if you are very eager. The weather changes rapidly so it pays off to stay at the top a bit longer if you happen to be in mist, because the view is breathtaking.
  • 2469 moh with a nice view. Crossing a glacier to reach the top.
