Built around 1180, Borgund Stave Church serves as Norway's best-preserved example of a medieval stave church. The name of this type of church originates from the its distinct architecture made up of vertical wooden boards, called staves. Notice the mix between Viking influence and early Christian symbolism, like the dragon carvings on the roof and the cross above the entrance. Keep an eye out for ancient runes written along the walls. Enter the church to view the ornate wooden carvings within, and then head to the visitor center to see exhibits related to the history of stave churches in Norway.
