Fredriksten Festning (Fredriksten Fortress), Halden

#1 of 35 in Historic Sites in Ostfold
Must see · Historic Site · Military Facility
At Fredriksten Festning (Fredriksten Fortress), view the remaining fortifications of the hilltop walled city that has played an important role in Norwegian military history. Built in 1661, the fortress was often besieged but never defeated, which is a point of pride for Halden residents. Most notably, Swedish king Charles XII was shot here in 1718. Climb the ramparts for great views over Halden, the harbor, and the fjord running between Norway and Sweden. Visit the museum within the walls, which displays various political and military history exhibits. You'll find various eateries inside. Keep an eye on small children, as there are no railings or ropes guarding the drop-offs. For travelers who use our world travel planner, Halden holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Fredriksten Festning (Fredriksten Fortress) and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • Norway do not have many impressive fortresses, but the Fortress of Halden is just great. Stay over night in Hotel Fredriksten close by and book a fantastic evening meal in the restaurant Curtisen...  more »
  • This is a place where The Swedish lion Charles 12. Where stopped and killed in his attempt to conquer Norway in 1714. A very nice old fortress and worth while to visit
  • This is a large area where you are free to roam as you please. The 400years of history are apparent. But there are on the other hand no one to keep you from doing something stupid. There are high walls where you can walk of fall off the edge as you please. But if you are mindful there are beautiful views and dark rooms to survey. There is ALOT of up and down on slippery cobbled streets and UNSECURED stairs. This is not the place if your knees are weak or you are afraid of heights. Large free parking and two places with proper public toilets. One in Fredriksten taverna and one right in the middle of the court yard the gift shop, both free and clean. The massive free parking is in the middle of the area and easy to reach.
