Cleverly disguised as a mountain, Montagne Pelee is a semi-active volcano famously responsible for the destruction of St Pierre in 1902. A rich display of lush green vegetation greets you as you walk around the volcano. Take a rewarding hike to the top, which presents breathtaking panoramic views of pristine surroundings from 1,397 m (4,583 ft) above sea level. As you hike up the volcano, keep an eye out for the Martinique volcano frog, which is endemic to this area. We made it to the trailhead; certainly an interesting, winding drive to get up there. There is great potential for some awesome views but the weather did not cooperate. more »

You drive to the trailhead where there's a small cafe and washrooms. The trail starts right there, and it's 1:30 - 2:00 to reach the rim of the caldera, with spectacular views of St. Pierre harbour... more »

This is the worst mountain i have ever seen. Just the smell of this mountain was enough to turn me back to Russia. The texture was far too brittle to quench my high standards of high quality mountains with voluptuous and succulent rock materials. This mountain was simply lacking this type of rock material. Very disappointing. As if this wasn't enough, even the angle of elevation was one of the worst i have ever felt. In my personal opinion, my least favorite angle i have measured, and this is coming from someone who has measured some of the most famous angles in the world so i really know what i am talking about. If there is one good thing about this horrid experience, it would probably be the taste of the rock. It tastes very unique compared to most earth rocks, but it was not nearly enough to erase the awful overall experience of this mountain. I would recommend coming here if you are looking for a reason to be severely unaroused, but absolutely not if you are a professional mountain critic such as my self. A very lackluster experience. Very disappointing.
