At Riga Town Hall Square, you can see symbols of Latvia's independence, such as the town hall and the statue of Roland. The statue of a Charlemagne's nephew--who was a fair judge and the defender of accused--welcomes guests from the middle of the square. Most of the medieval architecture was destroyed during World War II. On the northern side of the square, notice how the reconstructed town hall is topped with a Baroque tower and a postmodern roof. Look for the memorial plank on the spot where the city Christmas tree was lit in medieval times. The square also features the Blackheads House, the Latvian Occupation Museum, and the Sun Museum.
