Scuola Grande di San Rocco
Admire the majestic facade of Scuola Grande di San Rocco but be sure to go inside and look up. The large 16th-century wall and ceiling paintings by Tintoretto have led to comparisons with the Sistine Chapel. Originally built between 1489 and 1508, the church was overhauled in 1725. The rarely crowded church is next to the better-known Scuola Di San Rocco, also known for its Tintoretto works. Note the church has a dress code, with no shorts allowed. One of the great place to see in Venice, for a very decent prize compare to other more famous landmarks. Don't rush to visit, take your time to spot all the small original and unconventional details..... more »

Stunningly beautiful. This building is a remarkable work of art in itself. Dozens of canvases, on the walls, on the ceiling, display Tintoretto's narrative cycle of events, in both the old and new... more »

The Tintoretto paintings are amazing! In just three rooms there is enough beauty to captivate for more than an hour. Take your time and definitely rent the audio guide to fully appreciate the thematic harmony of the placement of each painting. Note to all, google maps is so horrendously wrong about the location of this place. It’s more than a half mile off. I had to ask five people for directions before I finally found it.

Another good reason to venture into the interior of Venice! This outdoor concert took place around August 10th or so at about 9:00pm between three buildings (Scuola Grande di San Rocco, Church of Saint Roch, and Leonardo da Vinci Museum). If you look close, you will see the red awning connects all three structures. The seating I assume was reserved, but passersby were able to walk up at the back to listen and take photos & video for free. Well worth the effort!!! [The desk clerk at my hotel seemed to think this was an annual celebration.]
