An icon that once stood in the chapel was venerated for having healing powers, making Santuario della Consolata a pilgrimage site for centuries. The original, humble structure grew over the years with each generation of monks. Inside the church, Rococo decorations reflect the light, making the marble and Solomonic columns gleam. Sculptures commemorating various saints fill the chapel and adorn the outside. Many of these hold special significance for the city of Turin's history. The saints represent the various modes of life in the city, from trading to health. The Santuario della Consolata (Church of the Virgin of the Consolation), a masterpiece of Baroque art, is one of the oldest churches in Turin. In its bell tower, you can find the largest bell in Piedmont and a saint is buried there. The sanctuary is especially devoted to the worship of the Virgin Mary, with a procession and ceremony dedicated to her every year in June.

One of the most amazing baroque churches I have visited: hallucinatory in its extravagance, curvaciousness, and glittery blinginess, and at the same time a harmonious building that invites prayer, or at least a quiet moment of reflection. The layout of the building is one-of-a-kind, as far as I know. Thankfully it hasn't been burdened with any modern church art. A bit removed from Turin's major sites, so not too touristy.
