  La costruzione del santuario, voluto da San Luigi Orione, iniziò nel 1928 e terminò nel 1931 Precedentemente nello stesso luogo sorgeva, dal X secolo, la chiesa della Beata Vergine delle Grazie e dopo che essa andrò in rovina, dal 1585, un tabernacolo a quattro facciate successivamente inglobato in un santuario nel 1607. Dal 1954 al 1958 è stata costruita la torre alta 60 metri alla cui sommità, nel 1959, è sta posta la statua in bronzo dorato della Madonna con in braccio Gesù Bambino (14 metri di altezza, 12 tonnellate di peso, è la più grande statua bronzea al mondo posta in cima a un edificio) Nel santuario è conservata la tomba di San Orione il cui corpo, visibile, è conservato in una teca con le pareti di vetro.

  Quando nacqui, mio papà stava terminando i 2 porta ceri che sono a guardia della salma di don Orione. Guardandoli ora capisco tutta la sua maestria, considerando che erano una sorta di opera prima. Detto ciò, il santuario sarà sempre per me un luogo del ricordo.

  When I was born, my dad was finishing up the 2 Porta Ceri who are guarding Don Orione's corpse. Looking at Them now I understand all his mastery, considering that they were some sort of opera before. Having said that, the sanctuary will always be a place of remembrance for me.
