Trip Planner: Europe / Italy / Sicily / Province of Syracuse / Syracuse / Parco Archeologico della Neapolis
Parco Archeologico della Neapolis, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, contains thousands of tombs dating back to 1000 BCE. In addition to the necropolis, you’ll find the Neapolis or “New City” archaeological park, which contains monuments from Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and other periods. Let your imagination repopulate the wild landscapes with the many historical inhabitants of Sicily. You may find signage a little lacking. Note that visitors over 60 may visit for free by showing their passport. Present-day locals still use the theater during the summer. Parco Archeologico della Neapolis is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our , world travel planner Edition.

Great place to see the Greek and Roman amphitheater, the only point is that there was not so much information available at the spot and that certain trails were closed to pass by. But nevertheless it.... more »
The Greek theatre is something to behold. Big and pretty well preserved. The roman amfitheater that is also there pales in comparison. The park with the caves is like a small green paradise, nice bonus after visiting the theatre. Worth 10 euros? Yes and no, all Sicily's sights seem to come at extortionate entry prices, but go there the first Sunday of the month and entry is free.
After finding where to pay and getting in, you find a garden, a small cave, and two amphitheatres. One in a poor state and surrounded by foliage so it looks like it is not well maintained but it could also be left like this, it is not clear. The second which is better looked after is covered in wooden coverings to protect the original seating areas and surrounding walls as it is used for concerts still. There is a cafe which we avoided but the prices looked shall we say, very high!. It is worth a visit if you are in the area.
