The church you see here today is a result of a promise Duke Victor Amadeus II of Savoy made in September 1706. He climbed a hill and saw Turin besieged by Franco-Spanish forces. He swore that, in case of victory, he would have a monument built to the Virgin Mary on the very hill where he stood. You are not allowed to visit the tombs of the basilique on your own. You need to go with an italian guide and it takes about 30 minutes. If you say you don't speak Italian, they give you a paper with.... more »

the Basilica was shut and seems to be most of the time but it is worth taking the funicular from 1890 up to the top to get a lovely view and enjoy the ride. Only 4 euros return No 15 tram drops you... more »

You get a birds eye view of not only the city but the region. Great views of the mountains. We took a taxi up and then took the tram down to the bus stop down the street. From there the 61 bus takes you to the Po Bridge.The views from up here are OK, not as great as people explained. Locals told me the best view is to go up top at the Mole Antonelliana.

We only did a tour of the catacombs and loved it. Great history and lots to see. Approximately a 45 minute tour with a guide. Very happy we came. Also visited the memorial for the 1949 tragedy of the Torino FC football team.
