Oratorio di Santa Cita, Palermo

4.7
Religious Site · Hidden Gem · Historic Site
The weathered exterior of Oratorio di Santa Cita belies the treasures found inside: Giacomo Serpotta's angels and cupids climb the window frames and floral gardens of the white stucco interior, peeking out at you from every angle. The oratory, built in the 17th century to entreat the Virgin Mary to aid in the resistance against Muslim Turks, also houses a stucco drapery representing the conflict's historic Battle of Lepanto. Looking up, you'll find realistic works representing the mysteries of the Rosary, while along the perimeter stand ebony pews inlaid with mother-of-pearl, where the confrati used to sit. • Beautiful, simple, elegant in its charming architecture. Intriguing entrance, pretty simple, a hidden gem. All white with a very few golden touches. Impressive and eloquent.  more »
  • Close to the main attractions in the centre and certainly worth a visit, already just for the inner courtyard with the remarkable tree.  more »

  • Utterly beautiful, almost no one there. Nearly unknown to tourists. In my view, a supreme masterpiece: beyond worth the price of admission - worth the plane ticket! Serpotta's decorative scheme really isn't decoration at all. The visual program, kind of a rococo Sistine Chapel in stucco with marble dust mixed in to add lustre, subtly interrogates war and masculinity. The two boys at back, a pair of monelli, "ragamuffins," from the streets of Palermo, stand for the two sides in the Battle of Lepanto (1571, Holy League v. Ottoman Turks) - clash of empires as a street tussle? In any case, pure genius.
  • Beautiful chapel with white relief sculpture on the walls with gold accents. The complex sculptures give an appearance of a painting with the dark shadows and bright highlights while maintaining an elegant and minimal feeling. The entry cost is 4€ or for 2€ more for added entry to the connected church a combined visit. If you have visited any other churches in palermo where you pay a fee, then save your ticket stub since they are part of the religious circuit and will save you 1€ per entry. Likewise if this is your first church, save the entry stub and you will receive a discounted entry in other churches.
