One of the greatest existing examples of Norman architecture in the world, Duomo di Monreale features huge surfaces covered in mosaics. Begun in 1174, this monumental complex eventually grew to include a monastery and a royal palace. Though many of the monastic buildings have been ruined over the centuries, a good part of the monks’ dormitory and the cloister still remain. The outsides of the principal doorways and their pointed arches are enriched with carvings and colored inlay, an unusual combination of Norman-French, Byzantine, and Arab building styles. Although in 1811 a devastating fire destroyed the tombs of both William II, the founder of the cathedral, and his father, the tombs and all of the damaged parts of the complex were fully restored a few years later. The duomo is stunning and definitely worth the visit. The main cathedral is free but the rest is worth paying for to walk through. It is a 30 min drive from the center of the city to Monreale. more »

I was very lucky to have seen the Montreal cathedral early in the year ..yes very impressive and astonishing....BUT here I'm visiting Montreal cathedral in summer wearing a summer dress...unfortunately I was not allowed to enter...if I wanted to enter I needed to purchase a long sleeve shirt ...REALLY!!!! Sorry but all I wanted to do was look at the church say a prayer and continue on my travels.....but because it's proven to me it a money making organizations im glad they refused me...because my GOD doesn't discriminate on culture or what you are wearing.... disappointed.!

This cathedral is amazing! Every part of it is decorated with wonderful mosaics. The chiostro outside is gorgeous and invites you to walk and admire the garden and the beautiful columns and rest and meditate thanks to the peaceful atmosphere.
