Witness some of the first human settlements known in Italy at Sassi di Matera. Making up the ancient village of Matera, the series of prehistoric, cavern-carved stone structures seem similar to Jerusalem or Cappadocia. Take a tour of an ancient cave house, or visit one of the town's seven Benedictine settlements. The 16th-century Rocky Church of the Holy Spirit sits atop the highest point in the town. You can walk the limestone cliffs surrounding the village for a view of the stone city, which is a World Heritage Site.     Beautiful place. Do yourself a favour and spend couple of days here. You won't regret it. People are great, restaurants are typical Italian and you'll love them. Prices in general are on the fair side. I was here 5 days and will definitely come back.

    Matera is an amazing historic place. It is well worth a visit. It has many streets to explore. The local bread is something you must eat when visiting the area. Every person we met on the trip were so friendly they welcomed you to their town. Visit now before the James Bond film is released.
