Castello di Donnafugata, Donnafugata

#5 of 75 in Historic Sites in Province of Ragusa
Castle · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
Dating back to the 1400s, Castello di Donnafugata is more a sumptuous noble house than a castle. After many years of neglect, the province of Ragusa purchased the house in 1982, and it has now been restored and made accessible to the public. The 20 open rooms, each with a particular purpose and style, still contain their original furnishings, which mainly date back to the 18th century. Explore the monumental park in which the house is situated, seeking out the artificial caves, the stone labyrinth, and other features built for the entertainment of guests. Castello di Donnafugata is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our , custom trip planner Edition.

  • This is a great half day trip a short drive from Ragusa. The rooms of the Castillo are truly amazing to see live. Don’t forget to go find the stone maze in the gardens  more »
  • Wonderful history and nostalgia. You can easily spend a few hours around the castle and grounds. There's not much else in the area to see or do, but we were pleasantly surprised by the restaurant near the entrance. Food was plenty and plates were large. All we needed was a bench to sleep on afterwards!!! If you have half a day to kill with friends, family or just scouting the countryside, you would do good to have a visit.
  • An interesting insight into the history of Sicilian ruling classes. A number of rooms are available to the public showing how they lived, dressed and what their interests were. It is inexpensive to visit therefore worth the visit if you are in that part of the island. And for fans of Inspector Montalbano, scenes were shot for the meeting with the head of the mafia.
