Basilica Catedrale Sant'Agata V.M. Catania, Catania

#2 of 32 in Historic Sites in Catania
Religious Site · Hidden Gem · Architectural Building
The seat of the Archbishops of Catania, Basilica Catedrale Sant'Agata V.M. Catania has been destroyed--by earthquakes and Mount Elba eruptions--and rebuilt several times through the centuries. The church's foundation is built on top of Roman bathhouse remains and what's left of the fortified church walls. Part of the transept, the two towers, and three apses are the only visible parts of the original Norman building. The humility of the original structure has given way to grand architecture and artwork that surrounds the tombs of King Frederick III, King Louis, and other notable Italians. • The church is truly magnificent. We recommend to climb the tower, there is a beautiful view and the museum is also nice.  more »
  • It is big and imposing. A quick stroll through it shows all you need to see, though. It closes early, so make sure to go throughout the day.  more »
  • Richly decorated Baroque cathedral. Combination of cathedral and Elephant Fountain makes Piazza Duomo an exceptional place. Taking wedding photos becomes a favorite activity by many tourists.
  • Wonderful church, unmissable if you are in the city.
