Trip Planner: Europe / Italy / Sicily / Province of Trapani / Calatafimi-Segesta / Tempio di Segesta
A stunningly well-preserved ancient temple in a picturesque setting, Tempio di Segesta has survived nearly 2,500 years seemingly unaffected by the ravages of time. Sitting on a hill just outside the site of the ancient city of Segesta, this Doric temple was built sometime in the late fifth century BCE. Several things suggest that the structure was never actually completed, such as the unfluted columns and the lack of any evidence that it possessed a finished roof. The building also appears never to have had a cella, a small inner chamber usually found in Hellenic temples. The origins of the temple remain a mystery, as it was constructed in an area that was not mainly populated by Greeks. Be sure to bring your camera and wear a pair of comfortable shoes, as the terrain is a bit steep and bumpy on the way up. Tempio di Segesta reviews
The temple and amphitheater, are both amazing in their preservation and settings. The views from both are spectacular. The ticket is €6, so definitely worth it. There is quite a bit of walking to do..... more »
The aercheological site of Segesta is absolutely stunning and should not be missed when around in the area, it is just a short drive, around 20 minutes, away from Castellamare di Golfo. The main... more »
Seeing the actual temple was cool! But it’s overpriced (6E) and they make you park (5E) in a separate parking lot and pay for a shuttle bus (even though there’s a parking lot right next to it). Then you can either walk up the big hill (we did; not bad) or pay for another bus. I would still probably recommend it, just be prepared for the price.
From the coach that escorted us from the car park to the venue, through to the diner & actual temple - it was amazing. The temple is an uphill walk from the dining area where the coach drops us off to, but it is definitely worth it seeing the beautiful surrounding views and the well preserved Segesta Temple. The food at the diner was lovely and fresh; obviously doused in plenty of olive oil! Staff were able to understand our English orders and the weather was obviously stunning.
