Built surrounding a 16th-century fortified port, Alghero remains one of Sardinia's most visited sites, rich in cultural and historical heritage. Ruled by the Spanish between 1400 and 1700, the town enjoys a distinct Catalan personality, as the Catalan language is still used in Barcelonetta, or Little Barcelona. Take advantage of its Mediterranean coast location by enjoying the white sand beaches or visiting the system of ancient sea caves, most notably Neptune's Grotto caverns.
