Learn about the Great Famine at Skibbereen Heritage Centre, a museum located in an old gasworks building with exhibits on the famine and on Lough Hyne. Through an interactive timeline that includes firsthand accounts and performances, you'll gain insight into the tragic event of the Great Irish Potato Famine of the 1840s, where about a million Irish people died. The second exhibit on Lough Hyne features Ireland's first marine nature reserve, where you can explore the Knockomagh wood nature trail and spot interesting plants and wildlife.     Very fascinating information. Be sure to do the actual tour, the historian that guided the exhibit is incredibly knowledgeable and presented a ton of info in a very exciting way. We were very awestruck by the presentation and would say it's a must see to anyone travelling to Ireland to understand the impact of the famine on the culture and community.

    Very informative exhibition with a lot of first hand accounts. The size was just right - the subject matter is pretty harrowing - it was concise and factual. Highly recommend for people with little knowledge of the famine and those who would like a refresher.
