The Latin Quarter, Galway

4.6
A highlight for many visitors to Galway City is strolling along the medieval pedestrianised streets. The area is characterised by buskers, boutiques, unique shops, cafes, bars, & restaurants. It has rightfully earned its unofficial title as 'The Latin Quarter'. Well, now it's official and with support from Failte Ireland & Galway City Council, the area has adopted the name ‘The Latin Quarter’.

  • On the road is what's going on! People in the continuing age can enjoy the musicians, acrobats, River dance Vorfürungen and street painters. In the evening live music in the pups.

  • While in Galway make way to the Latin Quarter during the day to check out the shops and pubs. The town is very walkable unless you have limitations. It is cobblestoned and some shops can be very tight...  more »

  • This is the area where everyone goes. It's one street with lots of smaller side streets packed with shops, pubs, bars and restaurants. Along the streets are musicians and buskers, some talented and some not. Most of the streets are pedestrian only with no cars. It's an interesting area with a great atmosphere with the Spanish Arch at the bottom and Eyre Square at the top. Just be aware of the professional Romanian beggars that get bussed in that pretend they are homeless. They are all over Ireland.
  • The most touristic road in Galway full of shops and pubs where you have a full immersion of traditional tastes
  • A lovely part of Galway. Always great life in this area day or night.
  • Dublin has Temple Bar and Galway had the Latin Quarter. I'll take the Latin Quarter any day. It's a blast. Enjoy great pubs and food and buskers. Lined with lights during Christmas/winter and bustling with tourists during summer.
  • Neat tourist area of town. Check it out when in Galway.

Where to stay in Galway

Stay at the center of Ireland's "Most Irish City," Galway City, by booking a hotel or hostel near Eyre Square, from which all city sights are walkable. If you prefer accommodation with more character, stay at a charming guesthouse or bed and breakfast just outside of the center, or look for lodging in the city's Latin Quarter, a bohemian neighborhood lined with cafes, galleries, and pubs. If you want to explore Galway County, book accommodations in the city, since it's a tourism and transportation hub on the West Coast. If you prefer the quiet countryside, seek out small, family-owned guesthouses on the Aran Islands or a cottage on the Connemara Peninsula.
