Eyre Square, Galway

#2 of 14 in Parks in Galway
Admire the scenery as you stroll through Eyre Square, Galway's urban park located in the city center. The site officially took the name John F. Kennedy Memorial Park in 1965. Because the park connects to many of the shopping streets, it serves as a popular meeting place. Pick up souvenirs and take in the culture on the nearby William Street or Shop Street. Mayor Edward Eyre, for whom the park was named originally, founded the site in 1710. In the time since, it has undergone several changes, including the addition of stone walls in 1801, redevelopment in Georgian style, and a complete reconstruction in the 1960s before reopening with its new name. With our custom trip planner, Galway attractions like Eyre Square can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • Just another place we marked on our map to see. We just didn't see anything special about it. Don't know what we were expecting.  more »
  • I got an ice cream from Gino's with my fiancé and came here to eat it and relax. Lovely area filled with birds and nice for people watching.  more »
  • Park in the city centre, shaded, with musicians in several places. It attracts tourists in the middle of the premises. Benches and lawns to arise. Warm place on a Saturday night.

  • Christmas Festival was nice. A lot of street food treat options of mulled wine and other warm drinks. Food prices were comparable to a sit down dinner place. Lots of Christmas trinkets and baubles. Very pretty at night.
  • A busy, bustling centre of Galway City. The transport hub and social heartbeat of the city. Easy access to all major areas of Galway City. Shop street is attached with huge choice of retail stores.
  • No police to be seen during the day or night. Expect beggers or those who may have too much drink consumed. Other than that it's a good Area in the middle of the city.
  • This car park is in a great location The only concerns I have are when entering The car park you must be careful with your car if a little big there are 3 to 4 levels you have to go up till you get to the upper car park and park the lower levels are very tight Happy shopping
  • It’s ok as far as parks go. It’s a very busy cut through due to the bus terminal being near by. And there isn’t much to see in the actual park. It’s a very cool area surrounding it tho. Lots of things to do

Where to stay in Galway

Stay at the center of Ireland's "Most Irish City," Galway City, by booking a hotel or hostel near Eyre Square, from which all city sights are walkable. If you prefer accommodation with more character, stay at a charming guesthouse or bed and breakfast just outside of the center, or look for lodging in the city's Latin Quarter, a bohemian neighborhood lined with cafes, galleries, and pubs. If you want to explore Galway County, book accommodations in the city, since it's a tourism and transportation hub on the West Coast. If you prefer the quiet countryside, seek out small, family-owned guesthouses on the Aran Islands or a cottage on the Connemara Peninsula.
