Dublinia, Dublin

#8 of 70 in Historic Sites in Dublin
Specialty Museum · Hidden Gem · History Museum
Dublinia features three themed areas, with costumed actors recreating a bygone era of explorers and knights and encouraging the visitors to join in the role-play. This living history museum, located within one of the city's two major medieval cathedrals, narrates Dublin's history through reconstructions of Viking and medieval buildings and street scenes. You can learn about life onboard a Viking ship, take part in a medieval fair, and discover how historians and scientists work together to uncover the city's archeological secrets. End your visit by climbing the museum's medieval tower, which offers a bird's-eye view the surrounding area. Check online for tickets combining museum admission with a tour of the cathedral's medieval crypt. • One of the best museums in Dublin! The staff are very polite, informative, and friendly. While the tours are self-guided, there were at least 2 staff members (in Viking costumes) positioned at 2...  more »
  • This is really a great exhibit. It is self-guided, which is never my preference. But there were several spots along the tour where you could press a button to play a recording of someone speaking...  more »
  • A nice handful of exhibitions, notably family-friendly. Due to the focus on presenting things in an easily approachable way, it lacks a bit of depth and contents become a bit general. Display is well-done, though. Not a must-see but good for kids and anyone with a light historical interest.
  • Really friendly staff and knowledgeable tour guides. I love an interactive museum and this one was great fun with the costumes that you could try on. If you missed the guided tour (which is for free, and takes place at 11.30 for us), don't worry, there's loads of info and audio. There's three floors, the one I liked the most was the ground floor about Vikings (and the floor for which there's a tour guide), as you walk up the floors you'll be advancing in time. There's also a cosy cafe at the top floor. Super convenient to get tickets online, they do not have a fixed dates/times so you can go whenever after its purchase. Must visit spot if you're visiting Dublin ;)
