Put on your hard hat and go deep into Dunmore Cave, a limestone cavity filled with history and beautiful formations. While the site is one of the smaller of its kind in Ireland, it compensates with unique calcite formations--the most famous of which is the Market Cross, a distinctly cross-shaped column. This cave is not a recent discovery: Humans have been visiting it for centuries, as noted in several literary pieces. One recording tells of a Viking massacre at the cave in 928 CE, which has been supported by evidence found on site. Be prepared for climbing stairs when you go, and don't miss the exhibitions in the visitor center for the full story. The sign clearly said that March to mid June, it's open 0930 to 1700. I arrived on Monday 2nd March at roughly 3pm, and found it closed. Very unprofessional. more »
Very cool experience! The cave is very cold and damp so make sure to dress warm. The tour guides are awesome and the price is great as well. Would definitely recommend to anyone visiting the area!
Fabulous. Not a massive cave system but very interesting and with really interesting stories of the history and human remains. Entry price very reasonable. Great cafe with delicious drinking chocolate. Really friendly staff.
