Explore the ruins and rich history of Hore Abbey, an old Cistercian monastery originally founded by the Benedictine order in 1266. The abbey once served as a residence for monks, but Archbishop David McCarvill evicted them after having a dream that they would kill him. This was also the last pre-Reformation Cistercian foundation in Ireland. Take a moment to view the old gravestones and take in the views of the Rock of Cashel. You can walk through these ruins with unlimited access. PutHore Abbey into our Cashel trip planner and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

This free site of a beautiful ruined abbey is in a great setting as it provides great views of the Rock of Cashel and it's lovely to see the sun setting through the window gaps. more »

This is such a cool place. Perfect for graduation or wedding phots, as well as a place with a fascinating history. Parking is tight, but the Abbey is awesome. more »

This was absolutely the best hidden gem in all of ireland. It was just my friend and I exploring the Abbey alone and we felt transported to another time. Out of all the places we went to (and we explored a lot of Ireland) it was one of my favorite. Especially since no crowds or stupid fees for made up stories. It was pure with just enough information on the tourist boards to figure out what it would have been like to be there when it was in function. Highly recommend.

This was really lovely to walk around. It's not busy at all. If you're in the area you might as well stop there for a bit and walk around.I enjoyed it more than the Rock of Cashel.
