Religious Site · Tourist Spot
Dedicated to the goddess Kali, Kalighat Kali Temple is a Hindu temple and one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, consecrated places of worship. Every day, thousands of pilgrims visit this site set on the bank of a canal to pay their respects to a goddess that resembles a mother to them. The image of Kali itself is unique in this temple, differing from others with its three huge eyes, tongues made of gold, and four hands. As you wander, look for the Sosthi Tala, a sacred altar where all the priests are female.
