One of the oldest Buddhist temples in the Darjeeling area, Ghoom Monastery stands at an elevation of 2,226 m (7,407 ft) and remains a popular pilgrimage site. Famous for its colorful 5 m (15 ft) high statue of Maitreya Buddha made of clay brought from Tibet, this mid-19th century monastery belongs to the Gelukpa or the Yellow Hat sect. Rotating drums provide entertainment for visiting children, and snacks and souvenirs are sold inside the monastery.
