Visit La Merced, a Baroque-style church with a captivating yellow facade, and an even more exciting interior. Built between 1780 and 1813, the church should not be confused with its sister church in Antigua, although it now holds many of the Antiguan church's artworks due to damage done by an earthquake. The gold-coated central altar captures your attention upon entering, with lavishly decorated sculptures of saints embossed in gold and silver, and an extensive collection of art and relics also worthy of attention. The silver-plated altarpiece of San Judas Tadeo, frequently visited by pilgrims, stands out as the collection's highlight. We came to Zone 1 on our own to walk around. From the Central Park / Plaza, La Merced is about a 5 minute walk. It is outside the Pedestrian Zone. The inside was well decorated with Christmas... more »

It is definitely one of the most impressive religious structure of Antigua. It is strange to say that for such a small city but Antigua has so many religious buildinga such as churches, cathedrals and convents that it is so hard to pick one. Merced is just a few meters away from the iconic Santa Catalina Arc. In your visit not only you can enjoy the impressive colonial architecture of the church, but also you can taste fabulous food from street vendors located every day in front of the Merced. Do not forget to visit the adjacent cafeteria/restaurant also

This golden church with white filigree winding it's way up the facade is the most stunning church I've seen in my life. Beautiful inside and out, it also has ruins of an old monastery attached which are well worth the look. It's right in town so easy to find and only a few blocks from Parque Central on the other side of the Santa Catalina Arch.
