Must see · Volcano · Nature / Park
One of the country's most active volcanoes, Volcán Pacaya erupts regularly but usually in a mildly explosive fashion. As a visitor, you'll have the opportunity to take guided tours around this natural wonder, which features cooled lava chambers and hot spots (over which you can roast marshmallows). Consider taking a horseback tour of the volcano for a quick and less strenuous excursion compared to the 1.5-hour uphill hike. PutVolcán Pacaya into our Antigua day trip planning site and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • Good easy hike, although lately you won't be able to get very close to the lava flows or see much up close. They will offer you a horse ride to the top if you aren't in good shape to hike.
  • Great hike. I got to roast marshmallows over a volcanic vent. Several times, the volcano spit lava into the air. Overall, this is an experience I would recommend.
