Trip Planner: Central America / Guatemala / Sacatepequez Department / Antigua / Convento de las Capuchinas
Nestled between green courtyards and gardens, the well-preserved ruins of Antigua's largest convent, Convento de las Capuchinas, hide secrets of the early 18th century sisterhood that came from Madrid. In 1736, within a decade after their arrival, the Capuchin nuns built the convent, which they abandoned after an earthquake some 40 years later. Appreciate the architecture and ambiance of the restored bathing halls and nuns' cells set around a circular patio with a tower. Two of the cells illustrate cloistered life with mannequins. To best learn about the historical details--such as the water torture chambers surrounded by gardens--you have to hire a guide. The view of the surrounding landscape from the roof is memorable. A museum on the second floor displays art pieces and other period artifacts. See Convento de las Capuchinas and all Antigua has to offer by arranging your trip with our Antigua holiday planning site.

As part of our Blue Planet tour we visited Capuchinas Convent. It was very interesting to hear how pregnant girls were brought here and also how girls became nuns if they were the youngest daughter... more »
Very interesting place, worth seeing, but if I had to do it again, I'd skip the sunrise tour. We are in good shape, in our 60s, but as seems typical for these tours, it was running over an hour late. Pace was fine for 20 somethings, but we were just enough slower that when the tour resumed after stopping for dialogue, we were just arriving and never got to hear commentary.
I hesitated to pay the entrance fee of 40 Qtz but after spending some time there I could see that the ruins are special. Even though the place it's not well maintained and they had a crew setting up for and event, it's still worth a visit. Make sure you go up the stairs where they a have a small museum.
