A quintessential Athenian attraction, the old town neighborhood of Monastiraki draws visitors by offering a blend of history and shopping. Named after its main square, the compact neighborhood represents the Ottoman and Byzantine influences on the city by serving as a home to both an Islamic mosque and Christian church. Avoid the worst of the crowds by exploring the neighborhood early in the morning.
