Anafiotika, Athens

#3 of 8 in Neighborhoods in Athens
Neighborhood · Hidden Gem · Other
A village in the heart of Athens, Anafiotika sits below the acropolis complex. Famous for steep streets lined with whitewashed houses, here you can enjoy a break from the hustle and bustle of the city. Established in the 19th century by workers migrating from Anafi, the area was upturned and damaged during archaeological research in the 1950s. Today the compact neighborhood has less than 50 houses. As you explore, admire the giant earthenware pots filled with bougainvillea. Browse the handmade souvenirs in the narrow alleys and mingle with the locals at a cafe.
