The Lion of Amphipolis (Greek: Λέων της Αμφίπολης) is a 4th-century BC tomb sculpture in Amphipolis, Macedonia, northern Greece. According to Oscar Broneer and archaeologist Dimitris Lazaridis, the first person excavating in the area in the 1960s, it was set up in honor of Laomedon of Mytilene, an important general of Alexander the Great, king of Macedon.

  • That ancient masterpiece which every Greek should be proud of needs maintenance immediately, despite that looks like it is abandoned somewhere in fields.  more »
  • My daughter was well impressed (and so was I) by the size and detail. If you are in the area the lion, the museum bridge and north wall make a nice trip together.  more »

  • A monument of incredible expressivity, crushed by some people we consider primitive! You look at him and you feel how your heartbeat is accelerating. I visited him several times, and every time I tried another approach, because the roads are very strange. It can not be reached directly from the highway and the only clue I can offer is that it is near the bridge over the Strymon / Struma River. But even so you have a chance to miss him because he is withdrawn from the road, on the edge of a clump of trees. Discovered by the Greek soldiers, I think it indicates the approximation of Alexandru Macedon's tomb, or it has been moved to ancient times, its original place being somewhere nearby the grave.
