A major medieval landmark in Rothenburg, Spital Bastion once represented a key part of the city's network of defensive fortifications. Constructed in the 1580s, the bastion stands on the site of a much earlier structure, which served a similar defensive purpose during the 13th century. The well-preserved fortification features an unusual design resembling a figure eight, with two courtyards and an adjacent moat. Explore the various gates and walkways, and look for the inscription over the main gate, which translates to, "Peace to those who enter, farewell to those who leave."
