Medieval Crime Museum (Mittelalterliches Kriminalmuseum)
If you're curious about ancient punishment and torture, you'll want to stop by Medieval Crime Museum (Mittelalterliches Kriminalmuseum). Four floors with more than 130 displays reveal the history of European law and punishment, starting with the medieval period. Be aware that the exhibits explaining the penalties that were meted out during this time might make you squeamish. The sections that focus on the development of German law are especially interesting. A guided tour will help you go even more in-depth. Many aspects of the museum may not be suitable for children--or the faint of heart. Our Rothenburg trip planning site makes visiting Medieval Crime Museum (Mittelalterliches Kriminalmuseum) and other Rothenburg attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

The museum starts with an interesting look at the devices and history of crime and torture especial in the Middle Ages but then wanders around between time periods and subjects including law... more »

lots of interesting items - most labeled in English as well as German, though a translation app on your cell phone will help a lot for extra details. Not gruesome since there are no dioramas... more »

I loved this place!!!! I went with my husband. I didn't expect much from it but oh boy I was wrong ! They have many items, information in different languages, pictures, etc from where you can learn a lot! Hubby wasn't interested in going in but once inside he became very interested in the whole thing. The con is that they don't accept credit card do have your 7€ in cash ready when you get there. There are many restaurants and cafe close by where you can get a nice meal. It might be a little confusing inside so make sure you check the entrance ticket. On the back of it has a map for you to follow and don't miss anything from the museum. You can take pics and have tons of fun inside. I asked how long it would take us to check everything out and I was told that about 45 min to 1 hour but to be honest if you wanna read and check everything it might take you longer than that. Anyway, highly recommend it!

This museum is pretty amazing. Real torture devices from medieval times are on display, along with many documents and books on medieval law and processes, plus drawings and depictions of the law process and torture of prisoners. It was exceptionally informative, as all descriptions were in English and German. It's horrifying and awesome at the same time. I loved it!!
