Trench of the Bayonets is a memorial that pays homage to the soldiers of the Bayonet Trench. These soldiers were buried alive under the enemy shelling, but there is no accurate historical evidence that proves this. This incident took place on June 12, 1916. At the entrance of the memorial, you will find a large concrete construction and a long flight of stairs.     Visited the Trench of the Bayonets in the late 70’s. It was touching and gut wrenching. Even now I remember the experience vividly. I want to go back and see World War I Site’s again, especially Trench of the Bayonets.

    Sad story of 3 company of 137th battalion. Buried in their trench with only bayonets sticking up through ground. A concrete shelter was built over them with a pathway leading to it. Well worth the stop if you're visiting Douaumont. If you can, walk through the forest to the ossuary.
